Irish Rose Consulting Receives Two Awards at Mashup Camp in Ireland

Palo Alto, CA - Dec 17, 2007 – Kapow Technologies today applauded Irish Rose Consulting (www.irose.com) for winning two awards at Mashup Camp held recently in Dublin, Ireland. By leveraging Web 2.0 mashup tools from Kapow Technologies, IBM and StrikeIron, the Dublin-based IT consulting firm created "Farm Explorer," a mashup that actively harvests the Web and company databases to provide a single screen of data feeds that help farm workers do their jobs.

"With a large farming operation, it has been traditionally difficult for all the people involved with crop production to remain informed about the current field conditions and activity history," said Dennis Deery, founder of Irish Rose Consulting. "As with any industry, enterprise mashups help workers achieve higher levels of productivity through better and more timely information."

Using mashup-building technologies from IBM and StrikeIron, and linking internal and external data sources together with the Kapow Mashup Server, Farm Explorer displays information from the farm's local databases including field numbers, crop and grower information, and pesticide application history. Among its many novel features, the mashup also provides:

  • A Google map component of the field's location
  • Links to PDF files of chemical label and Material Safety Data Sheet information provided by chemical companies
  • Recent photos of the selected field, displayed via a Flickr query
  • An Accuweather widget, providing current weather and a five-day forecast for the field location
  • A widget that displays local sales and use tax information for the field locale using the StrikeIron Sales and Use Tax Web Service
  • An Openkapow widget that scrapes gas price information from the MSN web site, which is linked to gas station locations near the field
"Farm Explorer is a perfect example to illustrate how mashup creation tools and the Kapow Mashup Server together enable mainstream businesses to build drag-and-drop Web applications as effortlessly as creating an office document. And this can be done at a fraction of the time and costs associated with traditional application development and integration," said Stefan Andreasen, founder and CTO of Kapow Technologies.

Whether it's combining information from databases, content management systems, departmental servers, personal information or the Web, enterprise mashups have one thing in common: they require programmatic access to the underlying data and services that comprise the building blocks of a mashup. While there are a lot of different companies that focus on providing the visual composition tools for mashup components, Kapow Technologies is one of the few that enables access to the underlying data sources and services to be mashed up, whether they are located inside the organization or on the Web.
